Jordan Spieth won the 2017 Open Championship in dramatic style by three strokes over compatriot Matt Kuchar. He fired a 169 that Sunday, but it wasn’t as simple as the score makes it seem. He steamrolled Kuchar down the stretch. It was emphatic and it was historic. The entire 2017 major championship season has been hurtling towards an epic showdown at the end of the year in the PGA Championship, and no doubt Spieth has joined Rory Mcllroy to become the co-favorites at Quail Hollow.

Mcllroy has been part of the top 10 roster in two of the first three majors this year and is the proud holder of the course record (plus two wins) ar Quail Hollow. This is a tournament everyone has tabbed him to be the favorite at and for one that he should emerge victorious at. But perhaps after Spieth’s spectacular showdown at Royal Birkdale, Mcllroy has a co-favorite as golf lovers wind down a delirious summer. Spieth will be going for a career grand slam and Mcllroy would be defending his turf. It’s an infallible recipe for creating some history.

Since the Wells Fargo Invitational in May 2016, no tournament has been played on Hollow’s grass. Ever since, the golf course itself has undergone some serious renovations in front of hosting its first major championship. As soon as the last group teed off on the final day of the Fargo Championship, construction crews descended on the course and began a 12-week renovation process that would have taken five or six months on most other courses. This steered into becoming one of the most phenomenal renovations of a golf course in the country, including three new holes, reshaped greens, overhauled fairways and the addition of areas for grandstands and spectators – all in three months. “It could lead to higher scores because of thickened rough and a faster track”, says defending champion Jimmy Walker.

If Spieth wins at Quail Hollow, he’ll join the elite group of Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tiger Woods as the only players to complete the career grand slam. Can alterations in the course bring about alterations in the hall of fame of the sport? Stay tuned to DSport for live telecast of the PGA Championship from 10th to 13th August.
