The world is all set to experience the 99th PGA Championship from August 7-13 and is completely sold out. With approximately 200,000 fans rolling through this tournament, PGA Championship has an achieved cult audience. Well you may ask why so?

Established in 1916, It is one of the four major championships in professional golf, and it is the golf season’s final major, played in mid-August.  In addition, this championship is conducted by the Professional Golfers Association (PGA). PGA Championship occurs every year which include the Masters, the U.S. Open, and the Open Championship (British Open).

Since inception, the PGA Championship was established for the purpose of providing a high-profile tournament specifically for professional golfers at a time when they were generally not held in high esteem in a sport that was largely run by wealthy amateurs. The reigning champion of the competition is automatically invited to play in the other three majors for the next five years, and is exempt from qualifying for the PGA Championship for life. The PGA Championship was originally a match play event; however, in 1958 it was changed to a stroke play event.

No major championship gives golf’s stars a better chance to be rewarded for great shots than the PGA Championship. The champion also receives membership on the PGA Tour for the following five years and invitations to The Players Championship for five years. The prize of the tournament is the Wanamaker Trophy, which the champion keeps until the following year’s competition.
