For past few days, things are going good for Kyle Larson.
Last week, Kyle Larson won the pole based off speed, but on Friday the Chip Ganassi Racing driver was rewarded for his season-long performance.
On Friday, when rain washed out time trials at Martinsville Speedway in Ridgeway, Virginia, Larson earned the top starting spot for Sunday’s STP 500 (11 p.m. on DSport) on the basis of owner points. However, Larson will have to overcome his own history at the .526-mile track.
Larson is the Monster Energy Cup Series points leader, having finished second or better in four of five races this season. Chase Elliott will start alongside Larson on the front row, with Martin Truex Jr. third, Brad Keselowski fourth, and Joey Logano fifth.
Rain hampered on-track activities Friday morning, delaying Cup Series practice by 30 minutes. A second band of severe weather brought heavy rain and lightning over the half-mile track, shortly after the conclusion of the one-hour session that saw Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch post the fastest single-lap speed. Larson was third.
All 38 drivers entered will start Sunday’s STP 500, the first short track race of the season.
