The MLS All Star game is back and this time the best of MLS stars will face the legendary Juventus at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta. This is the first All-Star Game to be played in Atlanta and the 23rd annual Major League Soccer All-Star Game. According to the reports more than 70,000 tickets have been sold so far. This year the league expects to break the 2010 attendance mark of 70,728 at Houston in which Manchester United defeated the MLS squad 5-2.
This year, for the 14th time MLS All-Stars will face a team from a European league, and for the second time an Italian Serie A team (the previous team was Roma in 2013). The MLS All-Stars are 7-4-2, with a pair of shootout losses. The All-Stars won the 2014 and 2015 matchups against Bayern Munich and Tottenham before falling to Arsenal in San Jose in 2016. Last year the Spanish giant Real Madrid defeated MLS All-Stars 4-2 on penalties in Chicago. The Spanish visitors dominated the game throughout the first half and make MLS’s best sweat it out in penalties.
After dropping to Madrid, MLS All-Stars will be looking to restore their winning ways against Juventus on Thursday. As MLS side has plenty of firepower at their disposal, the squad will look for the first win since a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in 2015. Coached by Tata Martino and captained by LAFC Carlos Vela, MLS ALL-Star team features players like Forwards- Sebastian Giovinco, Darwin Quintero, Midfielders- Miguel Almiron, Ezequiel Barco, Alphonso Davies, Diego Valeri and Tyler Adams among others. Also selected from hometown Atlanta United are central defender Michael Parkhurst and goalkeeper Brad Guzan.
For Toronto FC’s Sebastian Giovinco it will be a special reunion. He learned all his trade with the Italian Club and now will be playing against them. In an interview, Giovinco said “I’m very excited to meet again my old friends. It will be a nice moment to see everybody. We’ll try to have as much fun as possible.”
One of the world’s most storied clubs, Juventus will be led by legendary Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini. The Juventus squad will feature German midfielders Sami Khedira and Emre Can, as well as Italian midfielder Claudio Marchisio.
Both the sides will miss some of their key players like- LA Galaxy’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic, NYCFC season Goal leader David Villa, and football sensation Cristiano Ronaldo who joined Juventus after the World Cup 2018.
Ibrahimovic pulled out because of travel and fatigue while Ronaldo is on rest after the tiring World Cup game. David Villa has missed NYCFC’s last six games because of a knee injury, and will not be ready for the game in Atlanta.
