German legend Lothar Matthaus sees China as a more likely option for the 24-year-old Mario Gotze than a reunion at Liverpool with former boss Jurgen Klopp.
The German World Cup 2014 hero has struggled for form at Dortmund since making the move back to his former club last summer after a three-year spell at Bayern Munich.
Klopp, who handed Gotze his Dortmund debut in 2009, held talks with the player last summer over a potential Anfield switch, but negotiations faltered as the 24-year-old wanted to wait until after Euro 2016. And after a disappointing campaign, the attacking midfielder has been warned by Bayern great Matthaus that he is running out of options to kickstart his career.
“First, leaving Munich and then leaving Dortmund? That can’t be the solution,” Matthaus told Sport Bild .
“And where should he go? To be honest, and even if it might sound rude: If Gotze does not make it at Dortmund, he must go to China.”
