Lexi Thompson, the 22-year-old led by three strokes going into the final round at Kingsmill Resort’s River Course in Williamsburg, and after a bogey-free 65 on Sunday, won the title by a comfortable five strokes over In Gee Chun.
Thompson carded 14-under through 54 holes. In Gee Chun was in second. Three players, including Sei Young Kim and world No. 1 Lydia Ko, were tied for third at 9-under. Thompson shot 20-under through 72 holes to win by five.
After the loss at Mission Hills, Thompson came back to the tournament to play for the first time at the Volunteers of America Shootout in Texas. During the press conference, the fifth-ranked player in the world was asked about the game plan she had in her mind for Kingsmill Championship 2017. Thompson said her goal was to finish the tournament at 20-under par so she could try and focus on her game; her four rounds, 65, 65, 69, 65 did just that and set a new tournament record, breaking the previous record held by Annika Sorenstam.
