NEWS: Dardanelle’s John Daly won his first tournament in 13 years on Sunday and got a congratulatory message from President Donald Trump afterward.
The two-time major champion, Daly won the PGA Tour Champions’ Insperity Invitational — his first win since the 2004 Buick Invitational on the PGA Tour. Daly closed with three straight bogeys at The Woodlands (Texas) Country Club.
The victory was Daly’s 11th as a professional and his first since joining the PGA Tour Champions in the 2016 season.
Donald Trump President of the United States congratulated Daly for his victory by tweeting: “Congratulations to John on his big win yesterday. John is a great guy who never gave up – and now a winner again!”

To that Daly replied: “Thank you Mr President and also doing such a great job for our country! Means a lot!”

In his American flag pants, Daly shot 65 on Saturday and took a 1-shot lead into the final round. He buried 5 birdies on Sunday, earning his final birdie on the 15th hole just before bogeying three times to end the tournament. That final birdie proved to be meaningful and kept him in the lead despite the late slide and earned $322,500.
He opened with rounds of 68 and 65 to take a one-stroke lead over Kenny Perry into the final round. Perry shot a 69, and Tommy Armour III had a 67.
The two-time major champion becomes the 12th member of the senior tour to record a win on all three PGA Tour circuits.
Daly has spent his entire career resonating with the everyman like few golfers outside of Palmer ever have. Since his breakthrough at the 1991 PGA Championship, the masses have cheered his fleeting success and sympathized with the demons that more often held him back.
Sunday’s victory brought all the memories back and gives Daly’s fans an occasion to celebrate.
