Guangzhou is the third most populous province of the Mainland China is one of five National Central Cities. Historically, the city was one of the important terminus on the famous Silk Route. Today also, it is one of the most important business centres and serve as the major port and transportation hub.

Though, Guangzhou is not only about business, it is the home of Chinese Football as well. Guanghou is undoubtedly the city of football in China. The city has its own professional football club that plays in the Chinese Super League. Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao Football Club is a professional Chinese football club under the license of the Chinese Football Association. They also have their home stadium; the Tianhe Stadium has a seating capacity of 58,500.

The club was founded in 1954, and won several second tier titles before they became professional in 1993. Their results improved, leading to a runners-up spot in China’s top tier. Though the club witnessed downfall in its performance which continued for around 12 years, it again bounced back when the Evergrande Real Estate Group decided to purchase the club and pumped significant funds into the team. They immediately won promotion and gained their first top tier title in the 2011 season. The club is the only Chinese football club to win AFC Champions League twice, in 2013 and 2015. The club is also the first Chinese club to participate in the FIFA Club World Cup, making its first appearance in 2013.

Currently, Guangzhou Evergrande is dominating the Chinese Super League. All thanks to its manager Luiz Felipe Scolari, the legendary Brazilian manager, who is continuously working on improving club’s performance and coordination between its players. His vast experience as the manager of many renowned clubs and countries’ teams is helping Guangzhou Evergrande beat all odds at the Chinese Super League and become of the of the hot favorites.

So far 74 international players have played for Guangzhou FC. The team holds the record for longest unbeaten streaks of 44 games during 2010 League One to 2011 League sessions. It also holds the record of most wins in a league session when it won 24 matches in 2013 Super League seasons.

Guangzhou FC is surely one of the most favored teams in this season of Chinese Super League as well. With a manager like Scolari on its side, it will be interesting how they add up to their list of existing records!
